A review of the various treatments of oil-based drilling fluids filter cakes

Abstract Treatment of the filter cake layer after drilling is essential for better cement integrity and to retain original reservoir permeability. Compared water-based cake, oil-based mud removal more sophisticated as oil encloses cake’s particles. Therefore, clean-up requires wettability alteration additives (mutual solvents and/or surfactants) permitting acid/filter reaction. With an appropriate acid, microemulsions were reported be very efficient in cleaning cakes, due their low interfacial tension high acid solubility.
